Modern electronics are growing more powerful every year — and with that power comes a new set of demands. When engineers design a circuit, they think carefully about power consumption, heat, and performance. But there's one part that often doesn't get the attention it deserves: the enclosure — the box that houses the whole system.

An enclosure does more than just hold components together. It shields the circuit from dust, moisture, impact, and electrical failures caused by the environment around it. Choose the wrong one, and you risk downtime, damaged equipment, and operational headaches. Choose wisely, and your project runs safely for years.

Here are most important factors to consider before picking an enclosure for your electronic project.

1. Know Your Application — and Your IP Rating

Start with the basics: what is your circuit for, and where will it be? The design of your enclosure depends heavily on its engineering application. This is also where IP (Ingress Protection) ratings come in — they tell you exactly how well the enclosure guards against dust, water, and accidental contact with live parts. Each IP rating is determined by two digits that mark the level of protection- the first digit refers to protection against solid objects and dust, and the second one to protection against water. For example, IP65 means the enclosure is dust-tight and protected against water jets.

2. Consider the Environment

Will your enclosure sit indoors on a wall, or face the full force of outdoor weather? Extreme heat, chemical exposure, rain, salt air — every condition points you toward a different material and design. Before anything else, ask: where exactly will this enclosure live? The answer shapes everything that follows.

3. Pick the Right Material

Material science has come a long way, and today you have more options than ever. Beyond thermal and electrical needs, weigh price, size, weight, and looks.

  • ABS is is a tough, impact-resistant thermoplastic polymer that has the ability to absorbs hard knocks and heavy shocks without cracking. The TEHNOPLAST mostly uses ABS and MABS in building its enclosures.
  • FRPS is a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with strong fibers. This provide light yet superior strength that offers good dimensional stability.
  • Other common choices include glass, metal, galvanneal, aluminum, copper, and stainless steel.
  • ASA is upgraded ABS that does not yellow, degrade or become brittle under direct sunlight. It has outstanding resistance to UV radiation, rain, wind, chemicals and outdoor aging, making it perfect outdoor and industrial enclosure material.   • METAL enclosures enclosures are often chosen when a more robust feel is needed or when the installation style requires it. TEHNOPLAST E series, for example, uses a metal frame and metal door for flush mounting. Metal can be a good choice in certain indoor installations where strength and a solid construction are important. However, metal also needs proper protection against corrosion depending on where it is used. In wet or aggressive environments, material choice should always be checked carefully.

4. Size it Right

Size matters — but smaller isn't always better. Consider the depth of your final product for easy installation, and make sure there's enough room for proper cable management and power distribution. A cramped enclosure can create problems that are expensive to fix later. To make decision easier ask a few practical questions.

  • Will it be surface- mounted or flush- mounted? If you want fast and accessible installation on the wall surface, choose a surface-mounted enclosure. If you want the enclosure to sit neatly inside the wall, choose a flush-mounted model.   • How many modules do you need? Electrical enclosures are often selected by module capacity. A small installation may need only a few modules, while a larger home, commercial space, or technical system may need more room. These aren't just paperwork — they ensure safety, compatibility, and reliability. Always check that your enclosure conforms to the relevant standards before you commit.

6. Common Mistakes People Make When Choosing Enclosures

●        Using an indoor enclosure outside because it “looks strong enough.” Appearance does not replace an outdoor rating.

●        Choosing too small a box and leaving no room for future circuits or clean wiring.

●        Ignoring moisture, condensation, or dust in garages, basements, workshops, and technical rooms.

●        Looking only at price and not at installation conditions.

●        Assuming all plastic enclosures are the same. Materials such as PS, ABS, ASA, MABS, and polycarbonate have different roles.

●        Forgetting about access. The enclosure should be easy to open, inspect, and maintain when needed.

●        Mixing electrical and communication equipment without planning space and organization.

Electrical enclosures are not something you install and forget forever. They should be checked from time to time, especially in outdoor or demanding environments.

●        Check that the door closes properly and the seal is not damaged.

●        Look for cracks, discoloration, corrosion, or signs of water entry.

●        Keep the inside clean and free from unnecessary objects.

●        Make sure cable entries are properly sealed where needed.

●        Do not drill extra holes without understanding how it affects the IP rating.

●        If the enclosure is outdoors, check it after strong weather or seasonal changes.

●        Let qualified electricians handle electrical work inside the enclosure.

A small inspection can prevent a bigger problem later. This is especially true where moisture, dust, or outdoor weather is involved.
